MultiValue API available with Oracle9i AS
UniVerse, UniData, PICK and Prime INFORMATION applications run on Oracle 9iAS
Oracle Corporation in partnership with ONgroup is providing a run-time and development environment for Oracle9i AS that supports applications developed on the common MultiValue DBMS platforms. Mission critical MultiValue business applications can be re-deployed directly on Oracle without change.
BASIC Programs, Dictionaries, Paragraphs, PROCS, Sentences, Commands such as COPY, LIST, GET.LIST, CREATE.FILE, DELETE, SELECT, SORT and other common MultiValue features are implemented and work the same as they do in your MultiValue environment. The difference is that the database is Oracle. With your existing MV applications and your data in Oracle, industry standard tools such as Crystal Reports and JAVA can be used to create new applications and update the old.
Our last briefing summarized the benefits of Oracle9iAS and your MultiValue applications. Today's subject: Security
Oracle 9iAS Database Security
Oracle9i addresses your security vulnerabilities by securing data transmitted from client to application server to database, encrypting sensitive data within the database, restricting user access at the row-level, providing a single point of entry to all authorized applications and quickly directing data misuse. Plus you have concrete assurance against break-ins, having built upon 15 successfully completed security evaluations.
Security and Directory Services
Oracle9iAS provides a comprehensive integrated security framework supporting all Oracle9iAS components, as well as third party and custom applications deployed on Oracle9iAS. The framework is based on Oracle9iAS Single Sign-On (SSO) for authentication, the standard Java Authentication and Authorization Service (JAAS) for security services in J2EE, and Oracle Internet Directory for authorization and user provisioning.
Oracle9iAS Single Sign-ON (SS0)
Oracle9iAS SSO addresses the problem of "too many passwords". Oracle 9iAS SSO resolves this problem by enabling authentication to all appropriate applications and other Oracle9iAS components in an enterprise by entering a user name and password only once and by providing centralized administration of user name and password combinations for all users in an enterprise.
Java Authentication and Authorization Service (JAAS)
JAAS, part of the J2EE 1.3 specifications, extends the security architecture of the J2EE platform with additional functionality to authenticate users and enforce access controls.
The JAAS provider enables security for OC4J to enforce security constraints for servlets, JSPs and EJB components. It enables key security services for:
- authentication (identifying users)
- authorization (limiting what they can do)
- delegation (enabling code to run securely, with privileges of other users).
Oracle Internet Directory (OID)
OID is a critical component of the Oracle9iAS management and security infrastructure. It provides facilities to centrally manage user accounts, their access control privileges, and groups. Once users have been created centrally in OID, they can be shared across all components in Oracle9iAS. When users log in, they are authenticated once by Oracle9iAS SSO against their OID credential, and can then access multiple applications seamlessly.
How does this benefit UniVerse, UniData, PICK and Prime INFORMATION developers?
You get the best of all worlds. Your valuable, proven, stable and mature MultiValue business systems are executed on Oracle9iAS, unchanged. And, you get to use the features of Oracle9iAS including standard tools and solutions to maximize your IT resources. You can provide your organization with the best-of-breed technology available.
